Blemishes and Birthmarks

BLEMISHES

Skin blemishes may be flat or raised, scaly or oily, inflamed or quiescent, almost any colour, and can have a huge variety of causes. Many skin marks are entirely benign, and only require removal for aesthetic reasons or because they are itchy, are rubbed by clothes or hinder activity. Some are malignant or show signs of becoming malignant and should be removed and sent for a specialist examination of the cells (histology), including the margins of the excision sample, to check that all the remaining tissues are healthy. Recent advances in laser and light devices have added to the armamentarium for treatment of skin blemishes. There are a great many types of laser and light device and with intelligent use, these are very safe.

BIRTHMARKS

Congenital (present at birth) birthmarks can be improved greatly by treatment. Some can be treated by laser, others by a combination of excision (cutting out the problem mark) and laser treatment, and others by excision alone.

SERIAL EXCISION OF BIRTHMARKS

Serial excision is a technique in which the centre of a lesion is removed repeatedly, roughly every six months to one year, so that the same scar is used to remove the lesion which gets progressively smaller. Excellent results can be obtained.

CASE STUDY - MR GAULT'S SERIAL EXCISION OF PIGMENTED BIRTHMARK

You may remember our daughter who was born with a melanocytic naevus on her forehead in 2001? We first came to see you when she was 8 weeks old and you performed seven serial excision operations on her over a period of a few years. She had her 13th birthday last week! We can't believe how time has flown and how our beautiful baby has grown into a gorgeous (if hormonal!) teenager. You have some photos of her on your website (as a baby, aged 3, 7 and 10 years) and we thought you might like to see some up to date ones. We think of you often and remain eternally grateful for your skill and expertise, at a time when it seemed that no one else was able to help. She is sociable, outgoing and confident - something we feared may never have been possible for her.
