Tummy Tuck surgery

 

Also called abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck changes the shape and appearance of your abdomen (belly), usually reducing the amount of fat and skin.

Abdominoplasty is normally undertaken under general anaesthesia, and normally requires an over-night stay.

In some cases, a variable amount of liposuction is also required to remove fat.  In some, surgery to the skin around the navel is required to improve a hooded appearance, and in other, more extensive procedures, the navel is relocated completely when excess skin is pulled down toward the incision line and removed.

Fees start from around £7500, including surgical, anaesthetic and hospital fees.  

A formal moderate abdominoplasty, assuming that you are not obese and the skin does not hang in a fold, would normally take around 3 hours.  If you carry excess weight, it is best to lose as much of this as possible before surgery so that it can be tailored to your new shape. If your abdomen is already scarred or you have had surgery elsewhere which has not met expectation, the operative technique may be varied to avoid complications and may take longer.

Occasionally, particularly after childbirth, there can be an area of loose skin mostly above the umbilicus (belly button or navel).  It is possible to remove some of this using a small horizontal incision which can sometimes be hidden in a skin crease and around the navel.  Such surgery can often be undertaken under local anaesthesia.  Although with age, excess weight and particularly after childbirth, the abdominal wall can rarely be restored to the tautness of youth, a worthwhile improvement can be expected.
