Areola reduction

Making the areola smaller

The areola is the pigmented area which surrounds the nipple of the breast.  It usually increases with an increase in size of the breast, and may not shrink if the breast volume shrinks after breast feeding, for example.

A reduction in size of both areolae costs from £1995 under local anaesthetic.  The costs vary according to the laxity of the skin and the size of the reduction. Mr Gault’s technique varies according to the individual need, to maximise the reduction and minimise scarring.

The surgery, which normally takes about one hour, is usually performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out case. After surgery the wounds are dressed and taped to support the tissues.  Sutures are removed at approximately ten days, at which point the scars will look slightly red.  Treatment with a silicone preparation such as Dermatix settles the redness more quickly.  There are no health implications to the breast or breast feeding, but the surgery can affect the sensitivity of the areola / nipple area.
