Treating skin problems

The treatment of any birthmark, mole, tag or skin blemish depends upon a great many things, the type, the size, depth, the colour, the location, your age, and your skin type and colour, amongst many other things. There are many different solutions for blemishes and birthmarks. Some skin tags can be removed at the consultation. For some moles, the best treatment is excision, particularly if there is any concern about their nature.  To keep scarring to a minimum, in some cases, moles with a deep centre can be shaved and only the deep centre excised.  Laser ablation with the carbon dioxide or a pigment laser can also be of assistance for some skin lesions, including birthmarks, and often, a combination of conventional excisional surgery and other treatments can give the best result.  The majority of moles and skin blemishes can be treated under local anaesthetic in an out-patient (minor ops) theatre.

Mr Gault’s standard surgical fee for a small area is £495 including local anaesthesia and one follow-up, and three areas from £895 including local anaesthesia. The fee for the hospital which is currently best value would start from around £365 without histology, or £425, including histology.  The cost for larger lesions varies as to whether a small graft or a flap would be required to give a good cosmetic result. The starting cost of laser treatment is approximately £995.

Please be aware, however, that most children under the age of around 9-11 years prefer general anaesthesia, which significantly increases the hospital fee (from around £2550 at the Portland Hospital) and anaesthetic fee (around £425). There may also be the cost of histology (around £600) if the lesion is to be sent for laboratory examination. Laser treatment is also more expensive for children because the treatment can only be done in certain specialist hospital with specialist staff.

The location of your consultation appointment does not limit your choice of hospital for the procedure itself.

We have a new on-line booking system.  Mr Gault’s consultation fee is £240, payable on booking.

Mr Gault is also available on video by Skype at a cost of £295 for a 20 minute consultation.  The final assessment would still need to be made face to face, but it would at least enable Mr Gault to advise you of the various options so that a surgery could be pencilled if appropriate. A further fee is payable for the subsequent consultation. Your photos and a good video Skype connection would be useful when taking up such a consultation.
