Set-back of a single ear in a child

This information assumes that your child has not already undergone surgery at another centre which has not met expectation.

Mr Gault normally undertakes set-back surgery (pinnaplasty) from the age of 5, but he may consider operating earlier if the child is already being teased or needs to wear a behind-the-ear hearing aid which will not stay put.

His fee for the surgery is £2045 including one follow-up.  Some children of 10 and above opt to have the surgery under a local anaesthetic (LA), for which the anaesthetic fee is £300. Most children under 11, and indeed some adults, would prefer to have a general anaesthetic (GA), for which the anaesthetic fee of £345. The hospital’s fee depends on which one you choose, but in every case an out-patient stay is cheaper than a day case stay and in turn is cheaper than a one night stay.  It would be unusual to require a night’s stay in hospital.  Your hospital fee payment is made direct to the hospital. We have no sway over hospital fees, but the current approximate fees are as follows:

The Portland Hospital charges approximately £2550 for a GA or LA DC.

Hospital fees do not include painkillers to take home, but you would be much better advised to buy these over-the-counter because Paracetamol from the hospital is extremely expensive. Mr Gault prefers to leave an around-head bandage on for one week, after which sutures are ready for removal.  A headband should be worn at night for about 6 weeks post-operatively to prevent the ears being pushed forwards by the pillow.

For GA surgery, you add together the surgical, anaesthetic and hospital fees, for example: £2045 + £345 + £2550 approximately.

For an LA, you add together the surgical, anaesthetic and hospital fees, for example: £2045 + £300 + £2550 approximately.
