Treatment of scars

The treatment of scarring depends upon a great many things, the type, the length and how wide or stretched it is, depth, the colour, the location, age of the patient, and how old the scarring is, amongst many other things. For some scars, the best treatment is excision, particularly if there is a contracture or skin shortage, with multiple Z-plasties.  Injection or laser therapy, which can remove redness from some scars, remove dirt tattooing, and resurface the skin can also be of assistance, and often, a combination of conventional excisional surgery and other treatments can give the best result.

Many scars can be treated under local anaesthetic in an out-patient (minor ops) theatre. Laser treatment costs start at £600. Injection treatment (for keloid scarring or pain, for example) costs from £275 per injection for one site, and formal scar revision surgery from £995, depending on the dimensions of the scar, under local anaesthesia.

Keloid scarring can be particularly troublesome, and scars can grow to great size.  Injudicious attempts at surgical removal can worsen the scarring and recurrence is common.  Several injections of a steroid mixture into the scar, 4-6 weeks apart, are often required to soften the scar and shrink it sufficiently to permit formal excision in a manner which will limit recurrence.
